Minor eye problems

If you have a recent problem with your eyes – such as sore eyes, red eyes or visual disturbance – and you are registered with a GP practice in South West London, you can be assessed and treated by a local minor eye conditions service located within participating local opticians.

Minor eye conditions include:

  • Red eye or eyelids
  • Dry eye, or gritty and uncomfortable eyes
  • Irritation and inflammation of the eye
  • Significant recent sticky discharge from the eye or watery eye
  • Recently occurring flashes or floaters
  • In-growing eyelashes
  • Recent and sudden loss of vision
  • Foreign body in the eye
  • Note, this service is not for sight tests

If you have a major eye condition that is being regularly monitored by your optometrist or hospital eye service, it will not be covered by this service (for example: cataracts, diabetic retinopathy or glaucoma).

Appointments

The service is for adults and children. To arrange an appointment, contact a participating optician in your area.

Children under 16 years must be accompanied by an adult.

Patients requiring medication will be asked to purchase it over the counter, either from the optical practice where they have their consultation or a local pharmacy. If the South West London self care position statement does not apply to the patient, medication will be supplied by the optometrist.

Due to COVID-19, consultations will be undertaken by video or telephone in the first instance.
