|The Sutton Crisis Café offers a safe, supportive, non-clinical environment to people experiencing a mental health crisis, as an alternative to attending A&E.|
Commissioned by NHS South West London CCG, the Café is run by the Sutton Mental Health Foundation (SMHF), a community mental health support service for anyone over the age of 18 living in the London Borough of Sutton.
SMHF’s Acting Chief Officer, Lisa Lancefield said: “We are here to help adults in Sutton who feel they are in, or might be moving towards, a mental health crisis that doesn’t require medical intervention.
“Our staff have experience of mental health issues and have trained in Intentional Peer Support. The Café will have strong links with other mental health services in the borough, so that we can make sure anyone using our services can access all the support they need.
“We designed this new service through consultation and co-production with a wide range of service users, carers, mental health clinicians and other professionals. Our focus will be on supporting individuals to help themselves to self-advocate and draw on their own strength to better manage their own care leading up to and during a crisis episode.”
Dr Robert Calverley, Sutton GP and Clinical Lead for Mental Health, NHS Sutton said: “I am delighted that partners in Sutton have been able to work together to develop this new service for Sutton residents at the Crisis Café. It will be a valuable addition to the existing mental health support in Sutton. We know how valued crisis cafés are by service users and I am really pleased that we have this important resource in Sutton.
The Café is a safe, calm and non-stigmatising environment. It will be open from 6:30pm – 11:00pm seven days a week / 52 weeks a year.
