More than 6,100 young people aged 12 to 15 get Covid-19 jab during half-term week

More than 6,100 young people aged 12 to 15 got a Covid-19 vaccination in south west London last week, provisional NHS figures reveal.

With the option of online bookings opening a couple of weeks ago and children enjoying half-term last week, bookings were taken up at a faster pace with 6,156 jabs given to young people aged 12 to 15 to the end of 31 October – the equivalent of almost 880 a day.

More than 600,000 young people aged 12 to 15 have been vaccinated nationally and the NHS has visited thousands of schools since rolling out the jab to them at the end of September – just a week after updated guidance from the government.

Dr Nicola Jones, local GP and lead GP for the Covid-19 vaccination programme in South West London, said: “The NHS is making it as simple as possible for children to get vaccinated, which is demonstrated by the thousands who came forward over half-term to get jabbed.

“We need to keep that momentum going to ensure that children get the protection that will help them stay in the classroom over winter and protect their loved ones and communities as well, so I would urge anyone who hasn’t done so yet to book their child in for a vaccination.”

Parents can use the National Booking Service to organise a young person’s jab or use the ongoing schools programme.

Walk-in centres are also offering vaccinations to young people aged 12 to 15 to get their jab and parents can check the ‘Grab-a-Jab’ website to find their nearest centre.

Information about vaccination sites in south west London can be found at https://swlondonccg.nhs.uk/covid/where-can-you-get-vaccinated/vaccination-walk-in-clinics/. Vaccinations in south west London schools, including return NHS visits, will continue.

The NHS is vaccinating in line with guidance set by the Joint Committee on Vaccination and Immunisation.

More than 87 million vaccines have already been delivered and nine in 10 adults have had their first dose since the NHS in England made history when Margaret Keenan received the first jab outside of a clinical trial in Coventry, in December 2020.
